TRUST YOUR TRAINING

“TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND DO NOT RELY ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING; IN ALL YOUR WAYS KNOW HIM, AND HE WILL MAKE YOUR PATHS STRAIGHT.” —PROVERBS 3:5–6

SET

As I think about this Scripture, and Paul’s exhortation to Timothy, it truly explains how I came through a difficult time in my life. I was a junior in high school when I tore my ACL. My doctor told me I would never play another sport as long as I lived. I only had two choices after hearing that news: I could cry over the devastation of never playing anything again, or I could fall back on my training. I chose the latter.

I fell back on my training. I turned to the one true God and what His Word said about me. I prayed, declared and worked, trusting that my efforts would not be in vain. As I Iabored through those summer months, my doctor began to believe. He watched me progress and defy all initial odds. He went from saying I would never play again to telling me I would play in nine months. A short time later, he said I would be back on the court in five months.

During that challenging time, I spoke a simple declaration over my life and my rehab: “I believe in God. He lives in me, and He can do anything, so I can do anything.” My senior year in high school, I watched the God of the universe take my childlike faith and do the improbable through me. None of this would have happened if I had not fallen back on training.

Are you training yourself in the Word of God, the character of God and through the godliness developed in prayer? When you fall back on your spiritual training, God does the rest.

1. How will you going forward declare the Word of God over your life in challenging situations?

2. What has your sport training taught you when an obstacle seemed impossible? How can you begin to train your spirit to rely on the promises of God?
