RESET: Week 1

“STOP FIGHTING, AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD, EXALTED

AMONG THE NATIONS, EXALTED ON THE EARTH.” —PSALM 46:10

WELCOME:

When Christ resets my perspective, I’m free in Him.

BIBLE STORY: Jesus calls Peter

Luke 5:1-11

As the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear God’s word, he was standing by Lake Gennesaret. He saw two boats at the edge of the lake; the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then he sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”

“Master,” Simon replied, “we’ve worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll let down the nets.”

When they did this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets[c] began to tear. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’s knees and said, “Go away from me, because I’m a sinful man, Lord!” For he and all those with him were amazed at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, Zebedee’s sons, who were Simon’s partners.

“Don’t be afraid,” Jesus told Simon. “From now on you will be catching people.” Then they brought the boats to land, left everything, and followed him.

As athletes, taking time to reset starts with our need to recognize the need to reset initially. The pace of the season and life can feel nonstop. We get so caught up in the grind of doing life and sports that doing anything different seems wrong. Things may not be going as we want, but familiarity plus the fear of uncertainty keep us drilling away at things that just don’t work. We need a reset in our lives.

Q: Have you ever broken free from a bad habit such as improper form?

Q: What did it take for you to finally let go of your old ways and execute correctly?

In Luke 5:1–11, we meet Simon (a.k.a. Peter) at a critical reset moment in his life. He was at the end of a long but unsuccessful night of work as a fisherman. We can imagine how tired and in need of rest he was when Jesus met him on the ocean shore. Peter didn’t know much about Jesus when He sent him back into the deep water to do something he had already done and failed at before. This time, however, Peter’s experience was different. Peter was about to find out that he had been reset. He had an encounter with Jesus, the One who would change everything.

The truth is that, like Peter, continuing on the same ineffective path won’t start working until you reset. Even when things are just as you want them, it’s healthy to schedule moments to reset before things are dire and you feel out of control.

Every team and individual who makes up the team needs strategic moments to stop and take an honest review of the program. It’s a chance to visualize together what this team could be and buy into the coach’s plan to get there. Resetting requires intentional time. It could be a special meeting outside of practice or a retreat. You just need to take the time to do it.

Peter really didn’t want to do the same things that failed over and over the night before. But he acknowledged that there was a difference this time: Jesus told him to do it. “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and caught nothing. But if you say so, I’ll let down the nets” (Luke 5:5)

WRAP-UP:

Let’s reset as a team and individually. Schedule a time to think and reflect.

Find space where you can sit quietly, hear your thoughts and what God wants to say to you. It can be hard to break from our fast-paced life and can feel as though we’re off track, but it’s healthy to pause.

BE STILL:

Exodus 14:14 says, “The Lord will fight for you, and you must be quiet.” Again, in Isaiah 30:15, God says to His people “You will be delivered by returning and resting; your strength will lie in quiet confidence. But you are not willing.”

Q: Are you willing to rest with God and receive His refreshing, direction and encouragement for you?

BE OPEN:

“I PRAY THAT THE GOD OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, THE GLORIOUS FATHER, WOULD GIVE YOU THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND REVELATION IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIM. I PRAY THAT THE EYES OF YOUR HEART MAY BE ENLIGHTENED SO THAT YOU MAY KNOW WHAT IS THE HOPE OF HIS CALLING, WHAT IS THE WEALTH OF HIS GLORIOUS INHERITANCE IN THE SAINTS” —EPHESIANS 1:17–18

You never know what will be revealed when your team takes time to reset. It’s important to have a mind and heart that is receptive and open to hearing change, correction and so much more.

PRAYER

Father, I don’t want to live my days exhausted. You are my true source of rest and replenishment.

Will You help me make time to spend with You each day and find a rhythm that will help me operate to the best of my ability?

Thank You that You are faithful to give me what I need.

In Jesus’s name,

AMEN
